The new tesa® 4965 Original Next Gen tape performs equally well as the previous tape version tesa® 4965 Original, while representing the next step forward in our plans for more sustainable products. The new tape generation replicates the same high-performance level, tested under stringent conditions, as the original tape – with 40%1 less CO2 emissions through inclusion of biomass balanced adhesive components and a 90% PCR PET backing.
As we make use of raw materials which have a lower carbon footprint, the new tesa® 4965 Original Next Gen enables customers to design more sustainable products in their own value chain, ultimately supporting more sustainable solutions across a variety of industries.
Companies working towards CO2 emission reductions can use various approaches to make progress towards their own sustainability goals. Adhesive tapes could be part of this even though they might not be at the top of the agenda. In creating the tesa® 4965 Original Next Gen tape, we enable our customers to choose the right tape solutions for their needs and support their sustainable targets. Our approach to improve the sustainability of our tape by utilizing the biomass balance approach offers full transparency for our customers through a chain-of-custody certification. Together with the implementation of the 90% PCR PET content in the backing, we offer a new generation of tesa® 4965 Original with an externally verified reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
What is the mass balance approach?
Mass balance is an accounting principle to measure and track inputs and outputs of bio-based or recycled materials through complex value chains.
Mass balance is suitable for companies that want to accelerate the use of non-fossil feedstocks. The approach can be applied to existing chemical production systems and supply chains, requiring minimal investments. It can contribute to a continuously increasing share of, for instance, bio-based materials in the case of biomass balance.
When fossil, recycled, or bio-based raw materials are mixed in a production process, a later assignment of the input and outputs is complicated. This is where mass balance comes into play as with this approach, the flow of materials through a complex value chain can be tracked. It can be verified and certified for instance according to the standard of ISCC PLUS.
What is the biomass balance approach?
The biomass balance approach is particularly relevant when the process involves biological transformations, or deals with biologically derived feedstocks such as bio-naphtha or bio-methane. Biomass balance is particularly applicable to the production process of bio-based chemicals and fuels. In the case of tesa® 4965 Original Next Gen, the suppliers of our adhesive components follow the biomass balance approach to produce their more sustainable raw materials.
The tesa process
Our suppliers follow the biomass balance approach in the production of our adhesive components, which is certified via ISCC PLUS as a trusted certification scheme for the mass balance approach.
Bio-naphtha and bio-methane are two of the materials used to substitute fossil feedstock (e.g., naphtha or natural gas) in equivalent quantities during production of adhesive components which are used in the manufacturing process of tesa® 4965 Original Next Gen.
The certified renewable feedstock is then allocated to the adhesive components at our supplier. We then use those materials in the production process at a plant independently certified by ISCC PLUS to ensure that the whole supply chain contains sufficient biomass-balanced adhesive components. This certification demonstrates our determination to meet ISCC objectives.
