Smartwatches

Adhesive solutions for our daily companions.

Smartwatches - more than just electronic wristwatches

Smartwatches come under the so-called wearables category. They interact with your smartphone and, compared to a normal wristwatch, offer a huge range of functions. Smartwatches have many different uses, feature individual displays, and consist of many individual components. Smartwatches are highly complex electronic devices that are exposed to many external influences during everyday use. Manufacturers have to take this into account at the design stage.

What are smartwatches?

A smartwatch is an intelligent, networked wristwatch. It is about the same size as a conventional wristwatch and is likewise worn on the wrist. The equipment and functional scope of smartwatches differ markedly from normal wristwatches. A smartwatch not only shows the time or date, but also provides information on news messages, appointment reminders, or displays health parameters and physical functions like heart rate. Smartwatches have individually configurable high-resolution displays to present information. The case often features other operating elements such as buttons or crowns. Bluetooth can be used to connect smartwatches with smartphones. This provides them with Internet access and they exchange information bidirectionally with the smartphone. Several smartwatches permit mobile communication even without an explicit smartphone connection. They possess a SIM card and communicate independently via a mobile communications network. The smartphone operating system provides the watch's basic functions, which can be expanded with apps.

The worldwide market for smartwatches is chalking up continually rising annual sales figures. Forecasts expect worldwide sales of 115 million smartwatches by 2022.

Smartwatch components

The functional structure of the devices is similar to a smartphone as far as the components of a smartwatch are concerned. Adhesive solutions are often used for the assembly of these components. Below you will find an overview of the most common applications for smartwatches:

  • Display lamination
  • Lens mounting
  • Battery mounting
  • Sensor mounting
  • Heat pipe mounting
  • FPCs mounting
  • PCBs mounting
  • Speaker mesh mounting
  • Deco/Logo mounting
  • Button fixation
  • Shielding and grounding
  • Covering

Hardware requirements

Smartwatches are constant companions in everyday life. Smartwatch hardware has to meet tremendous requirements in terms of functionality and reliability. They consist of many highly complex electronic components and sensors that should function reliably in daily life and be impervious to external influences. This results in a range of different requirements for the adhesive solutions used.
