03Filmic removable tape

Removable tape with a film backing is ideal for the residue-free bonding of smooth surfaces. Different adhesives and adhesive layers on both sides ensure ideal performance. In particular, tesa® 68767 provides strong bond strength and shear resistance, even in demanding environments.

04Fabric removable tape

Fabric tapes have a tear-resistant, flexible backing. tesa® 4964 features a thick adhesive layer, ideal for bonding slightly rough surfaces. tesa® 51960 has different adhesive layer thicknesses. Both tapes can be removed without leaving any residue.

Mould Release

02Wind energy

Removable tapes are a popular and growing choice for wind turbine production. We have designed tapes to help simplify mould masking and mould release processes. This simple switch to tape has helped manufacturers save time, as less prep is needed. Some removable tapes are also reusable, which helps improve the mold durability.

05Trade shows, booth design and events

The very nature of trade shows and events is built around being mobile and temporary. Displays and signage need strong, reliable adhesives that cause minimal damage upon removal. We have a variety of removable tapes ideal for signage, safety, and displays. From cloth tapes to secure cables and wires, to foam mounting tapes for decorations and information.

FAQ

Removable tape FAQ

Also known as debondable tape, this is a type of adhesive tape designed for temporary, residue-free bonding that doesn’t cause damage to surfaces.

We engineer our debondable tapes so that they can be used on a wide range of surfaces. These commonly include the following, but will be dependent on the specific tape formation:

  • Metal (e.g., aluminum, steel)
  • Plastic (e.g., polycarbonate, ABS, PMMA)
  • Glass
  • Painted and coated surfaces
  • Composites (e.g., carbon fiber reinforced plastics)
  • Wood and engineered wood products

For best results, ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of contaminants (e.g. oils, dust, or mold release agents) before application. Some of our tapes may include primers or adhesion promoters to improve bonding performance on low surface energy materials like polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE).

It’s important to be aware that performance can vary between different types of debondable tapes. Some tapes are optimized for high-energy surfaces (like metals and glass), while others are specially engineered to adhere well to low-energy plastics.

The effectiveness of removable (debondable) tape depends on several factors. The lifespan of high-quality tapes can range from 6 months to 2 years for indoor use. While other tapes will be specially designed to last longer if environmental stresses are minimal.

Key factors that influence the lifespan of adhesives include:

  • Surface type and preparation: Clean, properly prepared surfaces ensure better long-term adhesion.
  • Environmental conditions: UV exposure, humidity, temperature extremes, and chemical exposure may impact and reduce adhesion over time.
  • Tape formulation: Some tapes are engineered for short-term applications (weeks or months), while others are made for semi-permanent bonding with residue-free debonding after years.

Manufacturers will specify the expected application life in technical datasheets.

The weight limit for our tapes ultimately depends on how well the surface has been prepared before adhesion and the material that is being supported. Our table below outlines the number of Newtons per cm our tesa® 65610 invisibond removable tape can hold, depending on the material (e.g. aluminium, PVC, and steel).

Adhesion to Aluminium (initial): 4 N/cm

Adhesion to Aluminium (after 14 days): 4 N/cm

Adhesion to PVC (initial): 3 N/cm

Adhesion to PVC (after 14 days): 4 N/cm

Adhesion to Steel (initial): 4 N/cm

Adhesion to Steel (after 14 days): 4 N/cm

tesa® 65605 is a double-sided polyethylene (PE) foam tape with a permanent adhesive on the open side and a removable adhesive on the covered side. Our formulation delivers residue-free removal.

The typical application for this removable tape is for signage and visual boards. The most common mounting for this application has been magnetic in the past, meaning use was limited to magnetic surfaces. Our newly developed multi-use tesa® 65605 ensures that this application can be mounted and demounted from a variety of surfaces, and can be reused up to 5 times. Both sides of the tape can be mounted well on non-delaminating surfaces.

tesa® 65605 mounting tape can be used on:

  • Steel
  • Aluminium
  • Glass
  • PVC
