Awarded at the MIMA Awards: tesa wins with the AI platform “Energy Intelligence”
- AI-based Energy Intelligence platform: Data-driven and automated control of energy operations, planning, and procurement
- Measurable impact: 6,800 t of CO₂ saved already in 2025; 38,000 t of CO₂ by 2030
- Contribution to the “we do” strategy: The goal is climate-neutral production by 2030 and greater resilience in a volatile energy world
Norderstedt – tesa, an international manufacturer of innovative adhesive tapes and self-adhesive product solutions, has been honored at the Microsoft Intelligent Manufacturing Awards (MIMA) in the category “Sustainability.” The awards, presented by Microsoft Germany together with the management consultancy Roland Berger, recognize forward-looking projects that consistently use digital technologies along the industrial value chain.
tesa received the award for the “Energy Intelligence” platform: a modular, AI-supported solution that controls energy operations, planning, and procurement in production in a data-driven way—fully autonomously and without manual intervention. In this way, the platform supports implementation of the “we do” sustainability strategy, with which tesa aims to achieve climate-neutral production by 2030.
Energy supply is becoming more complex—digital control is becoming a key success factor
Electrification, hydrogen solutions, heat pumps, and storage systems are colliding with highly fluctuating electricity prices and production requirements that often apply around the clock. Spreadsheets and manual interventions quickly reach their limits. The “Energy Intelligence” platform therefore answers a central question for the plants: What is the most cost-effective and at the same time most sustainable way to supply production? It connects energy infrastructure, production, and external energy markets—and automatically implements optimization results.
From monitoring to market participation: three development stages
The platform is being expanded step by step:
- Global monitoring and forecasting for energy KPIs and emissions data, demand and costs, as well as simulations
- Optimization: day-ahead and, in the longer term, intraday
- Simulation & procurement: simulation of future energy scenarios, derivation of optimal procurement strategies, and, in the longer term, portfolio management
Scalable AI platform with measurable impact
The solution is based on a modular architecture and operates largely autonomously (“no human in the loop”). This means that the optimization results are implemented automatically. It is vertically integrated and connects global procurement strategy with real-time control of assets; it is modular and integrates best-in-class partners into the existing data infrastructure; and it is market-based, because in addition to internal optimization it also includes external energy and flexibility markets. Even today, the platform shows measurable effects at German production sites: in 2025, 6,800 t of CO₂ were saved; by 2030, the potential at the German production sites alone is 38,000 t of CO₂. “The Energy Intelligence platform is an important building block in our strategy for climate-neutral production. It helps us use energy more efficiently and procure sustainable energy at the best possible cost,” says Andreas Rummert, Head of Global Operation, tesa. Globally, the platform provides real-time visibility through monitoring and forecasting and creates a reliable planning basis, which is essential for implementing the strategy.
The award underlines tesa’s ambition to translate sustainability consistently into industrial practice, and it follows further recognition, including the previously won dena Energy Efficiency Award.
Appendix: About the Microsoft Intelligent Manufacturing Awards (MIMA)
The Microsoft Intelligent Manufacturing Awards (MIMA) are presented by Microsoft Germany together with Roland Berger. They recognize projects from companies in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region that leverage the opportunities of end-to-end digitalized value chains—from digital product development to smart production and supply chain management, through to intelligent services and portfolios. Other award recipients included AUMOVIO (Germany), Kongsberg Digital (Norway), Tetra Pak (Switzerland), EssilorLuxottica (France / Italy), Erbe Elektromedizin (Germany) and Krones (Germany). About tesa SE
As a multinational company, tesa develops innovative adhesive tapes and self-adhesive product solutions for various industries, commercial customers, and end consumers for more than 125 years. There are already more than 7,000 tesa adhesive solutions that help improve the work, products or lives of our customers. Today, the focus is on sustainability and energy-saving processes. tesa invests in the development of environmentally friendly products and solvent-free manufacture processes as well as in the use of renewable energy sources at its locations.
tesa is active in 100 countries and operates plants in Germany, Italy, China, the USA, and in Vietnam. Around three quarters of the tesa Group’s sales (2025: EUR 1.7 billion euro) are generated by applications for industries. Together with its international clients, tesa develops innovations that are customized at product and process level. Already more than 130 tesa tapes may be installed in an electric car and over 70 in a smartphone. In the printing and construction industries, too, tesa is constantly penetrating new segments and countries with its special adhesive tapes. The company generates almost one quarter of its sales with products for end consumers and professional craftsmen. 300 applications, such as the legendary tesafilm®, make life easier or, when it comes to insect protection, even make it a bit more pleasant. tesa counts among the world’s leading manufacturers of adhesive solutions. Since 2001, tesa SE is an independent 100% affiliate of Beiersdorf AG (i.e., NIVEA, Eucerin, la prairie) with approx. 5,400 employees today.
