Emblem mounting tapes for automotive
Choosing the right adhesive for vehicle exteriors requires some consideration. You need a solution that is strong, resistant to vibration, stress, and temperature changes. Plus, it must have a long-lasting bond. You also need something that sits flush with the bodywork's angles and ridges without showing.
Emblem mounting tapes are typically used for automotive applications. These include cars and motorcycles, all the way through to specialist vehicles such as emergency services and transportation trucks.
In particular, our most popular emblem mounting tapes, widely approved by OEMS, are the tesa® 772xx and 78xx ranges.
tesa® ACXplus 772xx Base Line
The viscoelastic acrylic foam core of tesa® ACXplus 77210 helps provide a strong, reliable bond across a variety of surfaces and substrates. The foam core is able to compensate stress caused by thermal elongation of bonded parts, and is resistant to extreme swings in temperature, as well as UV resistant.
Key features:
- Viscoelastic acrylic foam core compensates stress caused by different thermal elongation of bonded parts
- Good dynamic and static shear resistance over a wide temperature range
- PFAS / PFOS free Product
- High UV resistance
- Good converting properties
tesa® ACXplus 78xx Black Line tape
This double-sided acrylic foam tape is ideal for mounting trims and components, as well as a specialist emblem mounting tape. Our tesa® ACXplus 78xx Black Line tape (opens in a new window or tab) comes in a deep black colour, making it ideal for mounting automotive parts.
Key features:
- Viscoelastic acrylic foam core to compensate for different thermal elongation of bonded parts
- Excellent cold shock performance
- Deep black color for enhanced appearance and high design flexibility
- Closed cell acrylic foam core for reliable sealing to prevent water penetration
- High humidity and UV resistance
- Superior push out resistance also at high temperatures
- PFAS/PFOS free Product
Automotive mounting tapes approved by OEMs

General automotive mounting tapes
A core challenge in automotive manufacturing is cutting vehicle weight to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. One way to achieve this is to reduce fixtures that add weight, such as screws and rivets.
That’s where adhesives, in particular automotive mounting tapes, are a game changer. Typical applications are vehicle exteriors, such as:
- Aeroflap
- Emblem
- Rocker panel
- Body side molding
- Roof trim
- Brake light spoiler
- Headlight washer
- Fender flare
- Shark fin antenna
- Window frames
- Parking sensors
- Front and rear molding
- Seals
Why use automotive mounting tapes rather than…?
Using specialist automotive mounting tape instead of traditional liquid glues, screws, and rivets gives you the freedom of less mess and less mass to the vehicle's overall weight. But it goes deeper.
- Less weight means lower costs. That’s production as well as fuel consumption for the consumer. .
- Available in gray or black to suit aesthetic requirements, our emblem tapes also come in a range of thicknesses from 0.4 - 2.0 mm, ensuring the perfect clearance between surfaces.
- Offer enhanced safety features, such as specialist fire-retardant and heat-resistant tapes. These are especially important on electric vehicles where the battery can reach temperatures up to 150° C.
Typical features of emblem mounting tapes
Focusing specifically on emblem mounting tape, such as the tesa® ACXplus range, here are the core benefits you can expect.
#1 Bonding power
A powerful bond, even between materials and substrates that are typically more challenging than the average. The heavy-duty bond of specialist tapes, such as emblem and other automotive mounting tapes, is not only reliable, but virtually invisible. Meaning you don’t need to sacrifice aesthetics for performance and reliability.
#2 Stress dissipation
Our specialist automotive and emblem mounting tapes have been engineered to withstand stress. From surface vibrations to extreme swings in temperature, this means that you can depend on tesa ACXplus range.
#3 Temperature and weather resistance
Changes in temperature, different weather conditions, UV exposure. All in a days work. These factors have been taken into account and tested when engineering the tesa ACXplus range.
#4 Minimum tape visibility once bonded
The foam layer on our emblem mounting tape is deep black to minimize visual disturbance to your vehicle's aesthetics.
#5 Unique conformability
Our automotive mounting tapes sit flush with the surface they’re applied to, creating consistent gaps between parts.
#6 Water sealing
Impermeable to water, solvents (such as washer fluid), and humidity, our tapes help prevent corrosion throughout your vehicle's lifetime.
#7 Noise prevention
Unwanted noises? Not here. Our tesa ACXplus range has a closed-cell foam construction that dampens vibrations and reduces sound between bonded parts.

Correct application of emblem mounting tapes
Depending on the surface you are mounting your parts to, our adhesion promoters may be required to guarantee the best, long-acting bond.
In any case, proper preparation is key to achieving a long-acting bond. We recommend the following steps before applying our emblem mounting tapes:
#1 Clean the substrate to ensure that it is free of dust, grease, oil, moisture, and other contaminants. We recommend using a lint-free cloth and a solvent cleaner, such as ethanol, isopropanol alcohol, or tesa® 60040 Industry Cleaner.
While recommended, steps 2-4 are optional.
#2 Once your surface has been prepared, apply tesa® 60151 Adhesion Promoter. This should be done with a lint-free cloth, sponge, or brush, and wiped in a single direction.
#3 Immediately after this, use a clean lint-free cloth to remove excess adhesion promoter. A squeaking noise indicates a good layer of product has been applied.
#4 Wait between 30 seconds, minimum, and 5 minutes, maximum to allow solvents to evaporate.
#5 Once these steps have been taken, you can now apply your tape. The bond should be established within 15 minutes of application.
#6 To ensure good adhesion, apply uniform, moderate pressure when affixing the tape. For optimal results, we recommend using a manual or automatic roller.
Recommended pressure for tape mounting:
| Product series | Line mounting | Vertical mounting |
|---|---|---|
| 78xxx series | 30 N/cm tape i.e. 3 kg per 1 cm tape width | 20 N/cm² tape i.e. 2 kg per area of 1 cm² 2-5 sec. |
| 77xxx series | 20 N/cm tape i.e 2 kg per 1 cm tape width | 10 N/cm² tape i.e. 1 kg per area of 1 cm² 2-5 sec |
