Every year, 100 billion parcels are on the move worldwide

Wrap, pack, unpack: The wide world has turned into one big department store. In the wake of globalization and online trade, goods and gifts travel non-stop around the globe. Every year, 100 billion parcels are sent out worldwide, and there will be many more. With two new sustainable organic packaging tapes, tesa wants to help ensure that shipping becomes more environmentally friendly. The specialist for adhesive solutions is expanding the ecological range of packaging tapes and is launching tesapack® Bio & Strong: a particularly strong adhesive tape that consists of 98% bio-based materials. Compared to standard adhesive packaging tapes it leaves a significantly lower carbon footprint. The second new entry: tesapack® Paper Standard allows trouble-free disposal together with the cardboard box. Both products are part of the tesa EcoLogo assortment that includes particularly environmentally friendly products. "The topic of 'sustainability' has many facets. As a company, for example, we have set ourselves the goal of operating in a climate-neutral way by 2050. On the other hand, we strive to enable our customers to act responsibly with ever more sustainable products," explains Dr. Stefan Röber, who on April 1 has taken on the newly created role of Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) in addition to his position as Head of the global tesa Product and Technology Development.

Made from corn starch and without any solvents

For the innovative tesapack® Bio & Strong, tesa uses for the first time polylactic acid (PLA) as a carrier material: the basic raw material is plant-based corn starch. The advanced organic adhesive tape for cardboard boxes (up to 30 kilograms) has a 98% share of bio-based material. The adhesive is based on the renewable materials natural rubber and resin. The coating process is solvent-free, and the core of the adhesive roll is made of recycled paper. The packaging tape is also strongly adhesive and transparent. The high content of organic materials in tesapack® Bio & Strong has been confirmed by DIN CERTCO and TÜV AUSTRIA with top marks.

Together with cardboard into the wastepaper

The new tesapack® Paper Standard offers an ecological alternative when shipping parcels up to ten kilograms. The material for the paper backing comes from exemplary cultivated FSC®-certified forests and other controlled sources. Also, in this product the adhesive is based is on natural rubber, the core of the roll is made of 100% recycled paper, and the coating is solvent-free. tesapack® Paper Standard standard can be disposed easily together with the cardboard. Unlike many conventional tapes both paper backing and adhesive of tesapack® Paper Standard do not disturb the recycling process of the cardboard which has been tested and proven according to the INGEDE 12 testmethod. Furthermore, tesapack® Paper Standard holds the FSC® Mix Label. The tape is suitable for use on manual and automatic dispensers.

More sustainable solutions are in the pipeline

Soon, the newly developed products tesapack® Bio & Strong and tesapack® Paper Standard will be followed by further innovative adhesive tapes for packaging: "We strive to offer our customers real added value. The tesa products should not only convince in terms of quality and performance, but also with regard to their sustainability properties," explains Frank Riebau, Corporate Vice President tesa Consumer & Craftsmen. "As a strong brand, we like to take responsibility for making life (and bonding) a little better every day."
