Investment in climate-neutral production: tesa inaugurates photovoltaic system at Offenburg plant
- Sustainable energy supply: New photovoltaic system will cover 25 percent of annual electricity needs and save around 1,200 tonnes of CO₂ per year
- Future-oriented: Comprehensive sustainability concept established in Offenburg with e-boiler, e-mobility infrastructure, and "ideas instead of waste" campaign
- Enhanced infrastructure: Innovative exhaust air treatment system and optimization of production processes for additional CO₂ savings of 124 tonnes per year
Norderstedt – tesa, international manufacturer of innovative adhesive tapes and self-adhesive product solutions, achieves a milestone on its path to climate-neutral production with the commissioning of a photovoltaic system. With investments in the millions in sustainable technologies and infrastructure, the company not only underlines its long-term commitment to the site and its sustainability goals but also sends a clear signal as an innovative, responsible employer while demonstrating its clear commitment to Germany as a business location.
Photovoltaic system saves 1,200 tonnes of CO₂ per year
The new photovoltaic system with more than 13,000 PV modules is distributed across three strategic locations on the plant premises – rooftops, open spaces, and carport roofing – and achieves an output of 5,800 kWp. The system will generate six gigawatt hours of electricity annually – equivalent to the power consumption of approximately 1,200 four-person households and covers around 25 percent of the plant's annual energy needs. An energy management system certified according to DIN ISO 50001 controls efficient distribution. In addition to supplying the plant, 20 EV charging stations for employees are also powered. The system will save around 1,200 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
Holistic approach to sustainable transformation
The sustainable transformation of the site is being driven by several measures: A new e-boiler will be operational from autumn 2025 with a connected load of 4.8 MW, leading to CO₂ savings of up to 5,900 tonnes per year. The expanded e-mobility infrastructure and a modern exhaust air treatment system are additional key components of the sustainability concept. Furthermore, the optimization of exhaust air treatment systems and solvent-free production will save an additional 124 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The concept is rounded off by the plant initiative "Ideas Instead of Waste," where employees from production, process development, and technology jointly develop innovative solutions for resource conservation. In 2024 alone, 13 projects in resource efficiency were implemented, saving more than 80,000 m² of waste and 1 million kWh.
Sustainability in tesa production sites around the globe
The investments in Offenburg are an important milestone in the group-wide sustainability strategy "we do". By 2030, the company is investing around 300 million euros in the transformation of its business. With a CO₂ reduction of 39 percent already achieved (Scope 1 and 2), tesa is well on its way to achieving climate-neutral production. The consistent transition to renewable energy makes a significant contribution: Today, tesa already covers 90 percent of its global electricity needs from sustainable sources. The photovoltaic system plays a key role here – alongside the new system in Offenburg, strategic investments in solar systems have been made at the headquarters in Norderstedt as well as in China, Italy, and the USA. In parallel, tesa is driving digital transformation as another building block for sustainable development. Along the entire value chain, the company is optimizing its processes through the use of AI and innovative technologies – from product development through customer interaction to resource-efficient manufacturing.
