Halfway to climate-neutral production:
tesa cuts emissions by 50 percent
- Renewable energy: 95 percent of electricity demand already comes from renewable sources
- Customer benefits in focus: New approaches for more resource-efficient processes, longer product life cycles and circular design
- Sustainability Week 2026: Fifth global campaign week under the theme “Sustainable Growth”
Norderstedt, September 23, 2026 – tesa, an international manufacturer of innovative adhesive tapes and self-adhesive product solutions, has reached an important milestone on its path toward climate-neutral production: Since 2018, the company has reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 50 percent. During its fifth global Sustainability Week, held from September 21 to 23, the company is demonstrating how it combines this progress with innovations for more resource-efficient processes, longer product life cycles and circular design.
Innovations for circular product design
How can products be designed to be easier to repair, conserve resources and keep materials in circulation for longer? To understand industrial customers’ requirements at an early stage and translate them into scalable solutions, tesa focuses on approaches to circular design, emissions reduction and resilient value chains. One example is “Debonding on Demand”: Strong, durable adhesive bonds can be released selectively when needed, allowing components to be disassembled without damage, replaced and reused. This makes repairs and rework easier, reduces material waste and enables design for recycling—without compromising performance. Across the entire tesa portfolio, more than 100 products and adhesive solutions now make a more sustainable contribution.
Transformation of the Hamburg plant
The transformation of the Hamburg plant shows how tesa is continuing to drive emissions reductions. At its largest production site, the company is gradually transitioning its energy supply to more climate-friendly solutions. From 2027, the plant is expected to receive green hydrogen via Hamburg’s hydrogen industrial network, HH-WIN. In this way, tesa aims to further reduce emissions while also strengthening the resilience of its energy supply.
“Halving our direct and energy-related emissions is an important milestone, but no reason to ease our efforts. For tesa, sustainability is a matter of future viability. That is why we are consistently advancing the transformation of our sites and preparing technologies such as Debonding on Demand for scaling. Together with our customers, this creates solutions that enable repair, reuse and improved recycling—and that are already addressing the requirements of tomorrow,” says Dr. Ingrid Sebald, Chief Technology Officer of tesa SE.
Progress in climate action and the circular economy
By 2030, tesa is gradually investing around €300 million in climate-neutral production across Scopes 1 and 2—including solvent-free processes, energy efficiency and modern technologies. Since 2018, the corresponding emissions have fallen by 50 percent. Renewable sources cover 95 percent of the company’s electricity demand, while its own photovoltaic systems generate around 10,000 MWh of electricity. This also supports customers in achieving their decarbonization and sustainability goals. The EcoVadis Gold Medal and CDP A rating confirm the progress made.

There are already more than 7,000 tesa adhesive solutions that help improve the work, products or lives of our customers. Today, the focus is on sustainability and energy-saving processes. tesa invests in the development of environmentally friendly products and solvent-free manufacture processes as well as in the use of renewable energy sources at its locations.
tesa is active in 100 countries and operates plants in Germany, Italy, China, the USA, and in Vietnam. Around three quarters of the tesa Group’s sales (2025: EUR 1.7 billion euro) are generated by applications for industries. Together with its international clients, tesa develops innovations that are customized at product and process level. Already more than 130 tesa tapes may be installed in an electric car and over 70 in a smartphone. In the printing and construction industries, too, tesa is constantly penetrating new segments and countries with its special adhesive tapes. The company generates almost one quarter of its sales with products for end consumers and professional craftsmen. 300 applications, such as the legendary tesafilm®, make life easier or, when it comes to insect protection, even make it a bit more pleasant. tesa counts among the world’s leading manufacturers of adhesive solutions. Since 2001, tesa SE is an independent 100% affiliate of Beiersdorf AG (i.e., NIVEA, Eucerin, la prairie) with approx. 5,400 employees today.
