Sustainability
As automotive displays become larger, thinner, and more integrated, manufacturers face growing challenges: what happens when a component needs correction and/or how can we incorporate circularity into our processes and products?
In many conventional assembly processes, a defect can mean replacing an entire module. This generates avoidable scrap, increases costs, and consumes valuable materials. At the same time, manufacturers need to ensure reliable bonding and efficient automated production.
Legislation, specifically in Europe, also calls for greater circularity commitments and impose more requirements on vehicle designs that among others allow rework, repair, recyclability and material recovery.
Together with AUMOVIO, we have developed a debondable adhesive solution for the automated assembly of automotive displays. Our tesa® NarrowSeal is applied robotically, creates an immediately load-bearing bond, and can be integrated into the existing production line instantly thanks to our developed applicator head. If a display requires correction, the bond can be detached in a controlled way directly on the spot using our Stretching & Debonding mechanism. This helps reduce material waste, preserve valuable components, and avoid unnecessary production losses.
Of course, creating a reliable bond is the core requirement. Our solution combines the proven benefits of viscoelastic adhesive bonding with controlled detachability. It requires no curing time, compensates for material expansion across the temperature range typically encountered in automotive environments, and supports precise, automated application, even around corners with fast cycle times. At only 2 mm wide, the tape also enables exceptionally narrow displays allowing more design freedom.
These benefits extend beyond the production line. The same debonding capability can support repair throughout the product life cycle and facilitate disassembly at the end of life of the vehicle. Displays can be selectively removed, again enabling individual components to be repaired or recovered.
This possibility is becoming relevant as in the European Union, the End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation, short ELVR, came into force August 13th, 2026 and will be in application from Sep 1st, 2028. The European Commission states that the new regulation covers the vehicle cycle from design and production to maintenance and end-of-life treatment. They call for vehicles to be designed for easier dismantling and place greater emphasis on reuse, recycling, recovery, recycled content, and producer responsibility.
Our tesa® Debonding on Demand technologies are a forward-looking response to this shift. Together with manufacturers and partners like AUMOVIO, we can take first steps toward future circularity requirements while creating measurable value in production today.
