tesa® 58628: sealing and shielding ECUs and DCUs from EMI leakage
A simple and cost-effective solution to protect safety-critical electronic systems from electromagnetic interference.
From airbags to engine control, modern cars are operated with the help of dozens of computers: A classic luxury car with an internal combustion engine can have over a hundred separate electronic control units (ECUs). In new electric and autonomous vehicles, however, these functions are often centralized in significantly more powerful domain control units (DCUs), which can handle entire domains such as the powertrain, autonomous driving, or infotainment.
ECUs and DCUs are prone to EMI leakage
Both ECUs and DCUs are critical to the safety and performance of a vehicle. And both are susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI). For this reason, each unit has its own Faraday cage. The metal housing usually consists of an upper and lower cover held together with liquid glue or a conductive silicone gasket. But the gap between the covers can be large enough for EMI signals to penetrate the housing and impair electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
To address this challenge, we have developed tesa® 58628, an electrically conductive tape (ECT) which:
- waterproofs the metal housing
- shields the ECU or DCU from EMI leakage
- is suitable for automatic application, a clean and highly efficient process
- can be used even when the housing has challenging geometries and curves
- requires no curing time
tesa® 58628 is a single-sided tape with:
A high performance sealing and shielding tape
Conical spool design for highly efficient automatic application
The soft foam of tesa® 58628 offers an extremely high compressibility of up to 90 %. As the foam evens out surfaces, the tape provides good sealing and shielding performance in accordance with IP5K2 and EMC 3 standards, respectively. Our ageing and durability test report also proves that it performs reliably, fulfilling the automotive ageing requirement.
Designed for optimal performance and efficiency, tesa® 58628 is a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape (PSA tape) that can be applied without solvents or prior heat activation. With a width of just 2,000 µm, it can be dispensed from a large 700 m spool, reducing material waste and the number of spool changes required.
Optimized for fully automated application
At tesa, we support our clients all the way from the selection of the ideal tape to the seamless integration into their production process. We supply not only the shielding and sealing tape, we also use our extensive experience to provide a customized solution and the ideal application equipment.
tesa® 58628 in particular is highly flexible and can easily be adapted to different ECUs and DCUs:
