What’s the right masking tape for your industrial process?

Industrial applicationTechniqueChoice of masking tape
Wet coating / Spray paintingCoating process by which the material is applied to surfaces with a spray gun or via other techniques (rollers, brushes, etc.). High temperatures are often applied to cure the coating.Masking tapes are used to protect areas that should not be coated. They should securely adhere to the specific surface being sprayed to prevent any paint bleeding underneath.
Powder coatingFree-flowing powders of thermoplastic or thermoset polymers are typically transferred to surfaces via electrostatic forces. The coating is heat-treated (180 °C – 220 °C or 356 °F – 428 °F), which leads to a melting of the powder and the formation of a thick and even coating layer.Masking tapes must withstand the high temperatures of the curing process without melting or breaking down. They should also be easy to remove to achieve a flawless finish.
SandblastingSurface treatment using abrasive materials applied to the substrate via air pressure. The technique is used to remove coatings or impurities and for surface modification (e.g., improving durability of metal surfaces).Masking tapes should be strong and durable enough to withstand the aggressiveness of the blasting material, air pressure, and duration of the process.
GalvanizingElectrochemical process to cover material with a metal coating (e.g., nickel-, chrome, or silver-plating performed in liquid electrolytes).Masking tapes need to withstand the various chemicals found in the electrolytes (alkaline or acid), as well as the high temperatures of the galvanizing process.
Surface protectionSurface protection Temporary protection of different surfaces to prevent damage through dust, moisture, scratches, or mechanical impact. Masking tapes should provide appropriate adhesion to ensure they stay in place and can still be removed cleanly without leaving any residue.Masking tapes should provide appropriate adhesion to ensure they stay in place and can still be removed cleanly without leaving any residue.

Paper masking tapes

In addition to our short-term, high-quality tapes for general applications, we offer a high-temperature range of paper masking tapes. These are ideal for spray painting applications involving oven drying temperatures up to 160 °C (320 °F). Even after repeated drying cycles, our high-temperature tapes can still be removed without leaving a residue behind.

For heavy-duty applications such as sandblasting or grinding, our paper masking tapes feature a tough, resilient paper backing, which is suitable for stenciling and sandblasting on stone, metal, and glass.

When you need superior masking performance during a painting process, tesa® 4334 is a premium paper masking tape designed to deliver. It achieves clean paint edges. The backing is made of Washi, a traditional, extra-thin Japanese paper backing.
