Our commitment along the value chain
Our approach focuses on putting climate and resource protection in the foreground to achieve our goals for today and the future. tesa contributes towards climate protection by reducing its ecological footprint along the entire value chain. As an international company, we are consciously pursuing the goal of closing production cycles to conserve natural resources.
The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time. tesa has become one of the many players from around the world committed to making sure that the average global temperature doesn’t rise by 1.5 degrees. With a clear target in sight, we aim to reduce our CO2 emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by as much as 30 percent absolute (compared to 2018). Our goal is to be completely climate neutral by 2050.
Many wheels have been set in motion to achieve our ambitious climate targets for 2025. These include:
Renewable energies. Green energy is a key pillar of our commitment. In 2019, five of our German sites have already sourced their electricity from renewable energies. By the end of 2020, 100 percent of electricity consumed by all of our production sites and office locations around the world will be from renewable energy sources.
Reducing energy use. tesa is well-positioned to limit our impact on the environment by lowering our energy consumption. An ISO 50001 certified energy management system has been installed at production sites with particularly high energy consumption (Hamburg and Offenburg) as well as the headquarters in Norderstedt, Germany. This helps us to optimize energy-intensive processes as well as identify areas with potential to conserve more energy.
Improving efficiency. In addition to reducing the absolute energy consumption, increasing energy efficiency also plays an important role. To achieve this goal, we are implementing technologies that are particularly efficient in conserving resources and energy. Select production sites, for example, have their own cogeneration units, allowing us to produce heat and electricity on site in an environmentally optimized way.
tesa’s commitment to climate protection does not stop at national borders or at our factory gates. Our mission to reduce global emissions includes upstream and downstream processes as well as our own production. Logistics processes are constantly being improved by reducing emissions in the transportation of raw materials and finished goods. We also believe that production in close proximity to our customers is key to achieving such goals. One example is the new factory in Vietnam which will begin construction in 2022 with the aim to strengthen tesa’s presence in Asia and shorten the delivery routes to local customers.
The climate crisis is not the only environmental challenge facing us. A global rise in waste is also posing extensive environmental challenges. Based on forecasts, Europe will produce around 490 million tons of waste per year by 2030. Therefore, alternative approaches, such as circular economies, are all the more important. The aim is to reuse or recycle resources wherever possible and to avoid waste from the outset. We have also made a commitment to creating a circular economy through various approaches such as testing alternative materials for our products, keeping as many materials as possible in the same life cycle, or recycling them.
Sustainably packaged. To reduce waste, tesa is starting with the packaging. We are increasingly using reusable or recyclable packaging, as well as packaging materials from sustainable sources. By reducing the weight of packaging, we can also reduce CO2 emissions caused by transportation. Going forward, we will also work on setting a concrete goal for sustainable packaging.
Partner for change. We cannot achieve our vision of a circular economy alone, this requires partners who share our values. For tesa, collaborating with partners and other interest groups is all about creating synergies and improving the infrastructure as a whole. We’re also working together to find ways to promote the recovery and recycling of materials through our adhesive solutions.

In addition to CO2 emissions, our focus is also on other air emissions which are created throughout the production chain. These include VOC emissions, which are harmful both to the environment and to human health and which are produced when using solvents. Solvents are used in production for coating adhesives and also for cleaning processes. Our goal is to avoid VOC emissions as much as possible and to expand our range of solvent-free technologies. We have already been able to achieve some notable success in this area: From 2001 to 2019, we were able to reduce our VOC emissions by 92 percent per ton of end products produced.
