Glass-to-Glass Bonding

New Dimensions For Secure and Constructive Bonds

Showcasing upcoming landmark building projects, Architect@ is a yearly magazine published by BCI Asia to offer insights into the evolution of urban landscapes in the region. Latest building technologies are also featured alongside the projects to cultivate the adoption of creative solutions among architects and engineers. Proudly presented in the latest Architecture@18 is tesa’s sophisticated solutions in office partition.

Sophisticated office bonding

In an increasingly competitive marketplace, an office has gone beyond being a workplace to become the embodiment of a corporation's ideals, branding and image. Many companies are willing to invest in a work environment that is not only functional, practical and conducive to productivity, but also one that demonstrates their prestige and sophistication. Comtemporary design concepts usually incorporate spaciousness and minimalist finishes, an essential component of which is aesthetically pleasing yet functional.

Recognising this need, tesa tape has created a new category of products that is technologically refined — tesa® ACXplus. This is a series of double sided adhesive tapes that consists of a high-performance acrylic system designed to provide better performance and overcome the weaknesses of most conventional fastening methods such as silicone and liquid glue.

The magazine is available for online viewing here:

Key benefits of tesa® ACXplus

  • Instant bonding: No drying process required, allowing for an efficient production as well as faster processing and storage.
  • Clean production: Helps retain a healthy working environment with no unpleasant smells and a hygienic production site.
  • Optimal aesthetics: No squeezing at bonding areas allows for less rework and more streamlined, cleaner finishes.
  • Higher accuracy: Provides constant thickness in the bonding areas for a more precise, stable production process and better quality outcomes.
  • UV and chemical-resistant: Ideal for mounting transparetn materials with invisible bonding, and excellent resistance ensures that it does not turn yellow over time.
  • Fuss-free application: No application tools are needed, thus providing better convenience and reducing investment costs.

A clear advantage

tesa® ACXplus solutions are available for various applications, including glass-to-glass, glass-in-frame, and glass-to-metal. Glass-to-glass bonding is usually used for office partition walls to prevent panels from drifting apart and to achieve an 'invisible' modern appearance. For this purpose, the ultra-transparent tesa® ACXplus 7056 and 7058 tapes as well as the 7076 and 7078 dark black tapes are recommended.

Conceived with slim glass-to-glass applications in mind, they provide immediate bonding on glass, with excellent resistance against UV, temperature, humidity and chemical to provide a reliable and durable bond for decades. These viscoelastic properties also compensate well for uneven surfaces while allowing for invisible joints, giving them the ability to provide a tight seal, mitigating noise and odour transfer.

In addition, tesa solutions provide superior edge-to-edge bonding for a seamless, continuous look. They can also be used for corner attachments, where they bond panels with a 45-degree angle for an optically clear corner. Furthermore, they also work well for T-Block attachments, which are primarily used to bond room dividers.

Framing it right

tesa tape has also designed specialised products for glass-in-frame and H-profile applications. Using the tesa® ACXplus 7055 or tesa® ACXplus 7074 tapes, glass or laminated wood can be bonded onto profile or frame materials such as plastic and aluminium.

The high-strength bonding effect allows for a quick and easy construction of partition walls with an optimal, elegant look, while the stable bond keeps the glass in place. Aside from excellent temperature and ageing resistance, the tapes also come with a viscoeleastic core that compensates for the thermal elongation of bonded parts. As an added assurance, this range of products is certified and tested by TUV Rheinland, ift Rosenheim, MPA Stuttgart and CSTB in France.

Simiarly, for creating slim and nearly invisible H-Profiles between glass panels, the transparent tesa® ACXplus 7054 is recommended for an easy adjustment of tolerances, with the visoelastic tape compensating for unevenness in the bonded materials. This solution also provides good noise dampening effects.

Flushed with potential

With tesa solutions, users can achieve 'flushed' designs where surfaces of different materials are aligned in a particular direction, leading to more sophisticated, cleaner finishes. Highly versatile acrylic foam tapes such as the tesa® ACXplus 704 (white/grey) and 707 (black) help provide immediate bonding to glass, aluminium and even powder-coated surfaces.

Designed to keep glass panels in place, this strong bonding effect makes achieving a 'flushed' design easier without the need for optical tape coverage or additional masking processes. This is further enhanced with the availability of a variety of tape colours to help the camouflage and blend in with the frames, while the additional use of proprietary tesa teflon edge taper and corner cut ruler allow for a bubble-free application on glass as well as a clean finish at corners.
