tesa® rapid®: a quantum leap in high-speed laser labelling

Laser engravable foils used for the durable labelling of manufactured parts have, for quite a while now, proved themselves in the production of automobiles. As the number of labels per car is rapidly increasing, due to legal requirements and regional customer demands, it has become necessary to develop labels with a higher lettering-speed capacity to keep up with decreasing production cycle times. To meet these requirements tesa has developed the new laser engravable adhesive foil tesa® 6940 rapid.

The novel layering of tesa® 6940 rapid allows the modern high-speed laser’s performance to be fully utilized and thereby supports even the shortest of production cycle times.

tesa® 6940 rapid® reliably supports even the shortest of production cycle times. The novel layering of the double-layered acrylic foil, called „High-Speed Absorption Layer“, allows the modern high-speed laser’s performance to be fully utilized. Through the improved energy absorption, the foil can be labelled at a speed of 4000 mm, as opposed to the standard 1000 mm per second. Modern laser hardware combined with tesa® rapid® laser foil enables a significant increase in productivity.

This new generation of foils is also highly resistant to chemicals, climatic stressors and abrasion. In addition, it is tamper evident - the label can only be removed if broken, thus meeting the legal requirements in numerous markets.

Convincing benefits of laser technology

With tesa’s laser technology, prefabricated single labels, which require great care during application in the production process, will become obselete. This results in significant cost savings for storage and in a reduction in manufacturing complexity. For example, in automobile production, one vehicle type requires various plates which are all different in format, design, graphics, text and country-specific languages. This results in an increase in complexity for purchasing, logistics and warehousing, and particularly during assembly, where there is an increased risk of confusion when applying the plates.

With the tesa® 6940 rapid® laser foil, a wide variety of markings in all required formats with varying content can be produced exactly when they are needed. All within one production cycle and on the assembly line: all vehicle-relevant information is read from a transponder or barcode on the vehicle’s body. Label production is then triggered and carried out computer-aided. This means absolute flexibility and provides enormous benefits: because fewer single labels and plates need to be kept available, the costs for storage, administration and logistics are lowered significantly. In addition, unused quantities and waste material become a thing of the past, due to just-in-time production. Even small quantities of labels can be produced at a much lower cost.
