Comprehensive brand protection by tesa scribos

Whether replacement car parts, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, or cigarettes – product piracy and trading on the gray market have developed into serious economic problems in nearly all markets.
Manufacturers, licensees, and authorized distribution partners bear the brunt of illicit product trading. There are also risks to the consumer, because counterfeit products are generally lower in quality and can even be life-threatening. The tesa Holospot® offers an effective way to guard against these risks. It distinguishes itself through its ability to store data, its being completely counterfeit-proof, and through the wide variety of characteristics it enables to be stored in the product directly. And all at high cost efficiency.

A number of major clients, including Siemens VDO, a manufacturer of replacement car parts, the automotive supplier, Gates, and the manufacturer of specialized chemicals, Umicore are already using the Holospot technology developed by tesa scribos GmbH. With various new technological developments and its client-specific trademark protection strategy, tesa scribos is continually expanding and improving the possible applications of the system.

One new thing about tesa Holospot® is the barcode and serial number in one label. The identification number can thus be read out with an ordinary bar-code scanner. In particular, this makes goods tracking and tracing much more efficient within the logistics chain. The serial number and thus the genuineness of the product can additionally be checked by the end customer using SMS or the internet. A convincing argument for end customers and a successful tool for contests and other customer loyalty measures.

A further new system variant is the tesa Holospot® with enlarged exposure surface. This makes twice to three times the surface area available for a series of characters for identification purposes, as well as six data fields. A much needed and essential larger logo presentation for brand protection is thus provided and, for the naked eye, the readily identifiable display of the entire Holospot® number.

Just as new in our program is the new tesa® 54022 Verification Label. It combines the advantages of an enlarged identification area with the display of both bar code and serial number. The logo can be presented in two colors. The data matrix can also be read out using ordinary bar-code scanners. Additional security is provided by an identification sign which becomes visible only using UV light and by two essential verification characteristics especially important for the end customer: on the one hand, the matching of the serial number by SMS or the internet. On the other hand, a further layer can be uncovered to provide room for placing additional information, by removing the upper layer of the label.

The new tesa Holospot® variants are an optimal addition to the existing properties. This includes, for example, the strong adhesion to even critical surfaces as well as the optimized manipulation protection, the so-called tamper-evident effect. Every attempt to manipulate a Holospot® label thus becomes readily and lastingly visible. This increases security and extends the deployment range of the security label.

The core of the Holospot® system is its visible and concealed characteristics at various levels. tesa scribos developed a new generation of scanners to read out data saved in concealed storage in desktop or notebook computers. Moreover, the Holospot® can be printed in various colors, which means that it can be integrated perfectly into the user’s product or packaging design.

The problem of counterfeiting increasingly extends to mass-market goods with comparatively low sales prices as well. According to experts, this is due to the increasing professionalism of counterfeiters, which enables them to counterfeit even this kind of goods efficiently. Active efforts to combat counterfeiting are therefore becoming of existential importance for more and more companies. At the same time, companies that equip their goods with innovative counterfeit protection ensure that they enjoy a clear competitive advantage.

For that reason, tesa scribos GmbH offers a comprehensive advising concept on development of an active, comprehensive trademark protection strategy as part of brand management: Based on the broad Holospot® technology platform, tesa scribos is currently developing client-specific protection systems. The strategy begins with precise definition of objectives, the requirements the technology will be subject to, and what the client expects the technology to do. tesa scribos is also working on concepts for operative implementation of the system and for detection and legal prosecution of counterfeiters.
